We’ve Been Programmed

We’ve been programmed. 

If you look around the world you can see so many ways in which we’ve been programmed – to listen to and respond to media, to agree so as to avoid being shamed by our community, to ‘do the right thing,’ even when that is changing regularly.

I am sure we could have a good time exploring some of the ideas that have been surfacing for each of us as a result of the current circumstances in our world.  

But I want to speak to a specific type of programming that is widespread, and that it is affecting  us deeply. And it’s not one that people are talking about. 

I don’t agree with it, and I invite you to choose not to agree too.

In our world at large, and EVEN in the world of coaching, personal development, and information marketing, we’ve been programmed with traditional thinking about what has value.

“Lead with something tangible,” they said.
“Make sure people understand why they would want to buy that,” they said.
“People won’t buy ___clarity, passion, love, understanding___,” they said.
“That doesn’t make sense,” they said.

And we agreed. (The collective we.)

We agreed that for something to have value, or something to be right, it had to make sense. It had to be able to be explained, to be justified, to be understood. 

We decided, yes indeed, if it’s not logical, or explainable, then it can’t be valid. We’ll just keep it to ourselves, and use the masculine linear language “they say” we “should” use. 

Quick, hide the magic!

Well, as much as I, too, have at times agreed to with this thinking, I know…. like a deep down visceral knowing…. that I cannot agree with this a moment longer.

SO MUCH IS HAPPENING under the surface in any moment – beyond what the rational mind can perceive. We know this (you and I). 

And when we work with this knowing…  

….that energy matters often more than words
…that our bodies can heal traumas that are generations old and thus release the possibility of disease
… that when we trust the abundance of the Universe it always responds
… that we will know exactly what spirit wants us to say in any given moment if we can just stay present… 

and the list of the possible things we JUST KNOW in our feminine knowing goes on… 

When we work with this knowing, magic happens. 

We watch our client’s lives transform from the root. 
We have the exact right clients show up at the exact right time. 
We happen to move to a new city in right timing to meet our right partner. 
We lift the fog and clarity appears.


There are so many potent results available when we stop agreeing with the traditional ideas of how things get done, and most importantly, what has value. 

Are you with me?

Shall we disagree with the traditional definitions of value, together?

Shall we trust the way energy moves and life transforms without us having to explain a damn thing? Without the language being perfect, or the level of activity draining us? 

Can we work lighter and with greater intention, trusting our people to totally get the value, because we are OWNING IT (not hustling around about it)?

What else is possible?

What new agreements shall we create together?

The rational mind is often considered to be more ‘masculine’. It is our thinking mind, and carries logical, rational thoughts.

I went for a hike today and put in my earbuds. 

Some hard-hitting tunes came on one after another (fun fact my favorite band is AC/DC). I went to my happy place in nature. Normally I keep it peaceful and serene, walking meditatively through the forest.

But not this day. 

After a light pop tune accompanied me to the trailhead, AC/DC led me into the forest, followed by the extended version of The Black Keys’ Howlin’ For You. And somehow this seemed divinely perfect.

I’d been writing about feminine energy all day, so the idea that my shuffle brought forward this song mix of masculinity felt interesting and alive.

My body enjoyed the rapid pace and deliberate movements that came through with this energy as my background music. I moved quickly, so much so that  I ended up needing to run back to my car because I’d gotten so far into the forest without noticing, there was no way to make it out before dark without running. 

It was not my normal hike.

As I mentioned I’d been writing about feminine energy. I’m not an advocate for the feminine at the exclusion of the masculine, but rather the two working in harmony with one another. 

As the masculine took the lead in the forest for a change, I thought about how important it is to use this energy, to use BOTH energies, as we lead our businesses. 

Then I thought about a recent conversation with some male friends on the topic.

First, they were raving about the book The Four Hour Workweek as the ‘book of the decade,’ and were curious about which book would take that spot in the decade to come, along with reminiscing about those they considered to be the most important in decades past. All of their top hits were written by white men. 

“Imagine if it were written by a woman!” I declared (thinking quietly about how short-sighted their selections were.) After just a brief look of surprise on their faces, one chimed in that he thought that would be great, “It’s about time,” he said. 

The conversation shortly after drifted to the topic of intuition and spirituality. (Much to my delight!) 

The guys were speculating on this new way of leading and how helpful it could be.

[Sidenote: a part of me in this moment wants to laugh and poke fun at their new awakening about intuitive leadership – duh… we women have been on about this for DECADES, and even written books about it, ones that might be better than 4-hour workweek! However a bigger part of me realizes that we women have also been quite quiet and hidden about this, relatively speaking. So even for us, intuitive leadership can feel like it’s ‘new’ — and I am so grateful these men are speaking about their feminine gifts so I do not really wish to make fun!]

Again I spoke up. I shared about one of my favorite books I’ve been sharing about (for a decade) by Kurt Wright called Breaking the Rules. 

Kurt studied what he called ‘being on a roll.’ He did a very masculine (rational, linearly measured) comparison of companies that were on a roll (year over year of consistent double digit sales growth) and those who were not (had double digit growth one year but did not repeat it). You’ll have to read the book (I recommend it!) because being on a roll has everything to do with energy. 

Back to my conversation –  I shared with the guys Kurt’s teaching about the rational mind and the intuitive mind. The rational mind is often considered to be more ‘masculine’. It is our thinking mind, and carries logical, rational thoughts. Kurt describes that the rational mind is incapable of discerning Truth. 

The intuitive mind is thus considered to be more ‘feminine’ (women’s intuition!). Of course we modern lightworkers know feminine and female are not the same thing, but that’s another conversation. 

Kurt describes that the intuitive mind is where Truth lies. 

Let me say this again. The rational mind cannot discern truth. The rational mind is designed to ask great questions of the intuitive mind, which is where the truth, the ‘knowing’ lives. 

I suggest to them, as I will to you now… what if the masculine parts of us, the masculine energies that we all have access to, were meant to be BRILLIANT at asking the feminine parts of us, or our feminine energies of inner knowing, what the Truth is in any given situation?

How might that work out for us?

And what if we humans were to cooperate with one another in such a way that those who were actively harnessing more masculine energies were to ask questions of those who were actively harnessing more feminine energies, so as to tap into Truth and use that truth to make intuitively AND rationally sound decisions?

Because “just be rational” on its own is simply not enough.

And if YOU are harnessing more of the feminine energy – how can YOU assert and own the VALUE of that as THE ONLY truth-channeling energy?

And if you are, as I was during this particular hike, channeling more of the masuculine, how can you use that energy to create the right solid questions to bring to your intuition? (Or the intuition  of a trusted friend who is tapped in to their feminine.)

I can tell you this led to a rich and interesting conversation — one that I likely would NOT have had were I not LIT UP about what is possible right now if we can only, collectively, find a way to lead differently.
